More voices do not guarantee better decisions. Collective intelligence depends on whether a system knows what to ask of whom, when to ask it, and how to turn a signal into action.
Governance gives us a useful proving ground because the work is visible: proposals, objections, delegations, votes, incentives, and execution leave a trace. By studying those traces across organizations, we can see where participation creates useful information—and where it creates noise, delay, or responsibility without authority.
Study scope
The research record includes 59K forum posts analyzed, 15 DAOs in one comparative study, and 4.8K governance threads mapped. We look across the full decision cycle rather than treating a vote as the whole governance event. Counts in this public summary are rounded; they describe the study record, not a claim that the sample represents every DAO.

Interpretation and limits
This is observational research over public artifacts. It can show how a system presents itself, how decisions move through visible channels, and which patterns recur in the available record. It cannot reveal every private conversation, prove that one mechanism caused an outcome, or substitute for context-specific judgment.
Those limits are part of the result. A governance system should be designed with enough humility to distinguish a useful signal from a complete explanation.
Why it matters beyond DAOs
The underlying design problems are not crypto-specific. Any networked organization must decide how to combine local knowledge with shared direction, how to reward work that is hard to observe, and how to preserve a meaningful voice without requiring everyone to decide everything.
